Bonabyl : A Frightful Comic Adventure by Manek D’Silva

Notes

January 19, 2016:

The boys seem to be having a slight difference in opinion, eh?

There I was, minding my own business, struggling to draw and colour another page of my humble comic Bonabyl, and not getting very far with it. Across the room, a book from my library twitched and flew right off the shelf Interstellar-style, and I was like whodunit? I went over to discover that the culprit was Umbrella Academy:Dallas, the second comic by Gerard Way & Gabriel Bá, jumping out into plain sight only to remind me I’d never be as good as them. At first I cried unto the heavens, “Curse you Bá, why do you mock me so?”. But then I stopped working for an hour and instead looked through the entire book, which happens to be one of my biggest art inspirations; and when I started working again, I kid you not, unexpected lines and colours intuitively spilled out of the pen and on to page 22 in a manner most magical.

The moral of the story is collect and surround yourself with work done by people you admire, books and items and posters and articles by masters in every field, even just having them around will help improve your own work and give you a little boost when you’re low on cooljuice.
